iris In Greek mythology, Iris was a maiden who caught the eye of Zeus, king of the heavens. His jealous wife, Hera, was about to destroy her when she was rescued by the goddess Juno, who gave her a cloak of invisibility. Juno employed her as a messenger to mortals and when Iris travelled down to earth, her cloak hid her from view but left a colourful trail, the rainbow.
